Carrefour de la Mer
The Carrefour de la Mer recreation and tourism complex has become a must-visit destination in Caraquet. In recent years, the complex has hosted major performances and events. It was designed to easily accommodate a range of events, such as festivals, conferences, exhibitions and banquets.
The Musée acadien, established in the mid-1960s, has a vast collection of documents from families in the region. Each summer, there is also a different exhibition on the heritage of the Acadian Peninsula.
Renowned for its authentic historical reconstruction and its warm welcome, the Acadian Historical Village recreates the lives of our Acadian ancestors from 1770 to 1949. More than 40 historical buildings, inhabited by heritage interpreters in period costume, will make you think you’ve stepped back in time on a journey into the past. Each building’s occupant has a story to tell or an occupation or custom to bring to life. Make time for this unique experience!
Just east of Caraquet is the Shippagan Aquarium and Marine Centre, where visitors can learn about native marine species (look for the rare blue lobster) and watch seals glide around in the outdoor tank behind the building.
In the heart of the Acadian Peninsula, some 15 minutes from Caraquet, the Pokemouche 18-hole golf course offers equipment rental services and instruction by a professional golfer. The course is challenging. Tournaments are held in this magnificent setting every summer.
Each year, the Festival acadien presents more than 200 artists of various disciplines from Acadia and, increasingly, from French-speaking Canada and around the world. Today the Festival has become a popular cultural and artistic event that is accessible to all. Its programming reaches out to the young and the young at heart with affordable pricing that encourages everyone to join in the fun.
The FestiVin in Caraquet is a major event featuring great wines and food. It also marks the launch of the tourist season in the Acadian Peninsula. The weeklong event is packed with activities that will showcase wines from several regions of France and from Canada, California, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Italy and Spain.
Since its beginning, the Gala has allowed nearly 400 emerging artists up on stage and an enriching experience both professionally and personally. Since the 80s, the Gala de la chanson de Caraquet offers training workshops for its participants and is the only event of its kind in Canada to offer two series of training led by experienced stage professionals. It’s more than a competition, it is a true school of the art of songwriting and song interpretation.
